Mara is now the sole surviving pup of the band's lead female's litter. She might be small, but she's positively thriving with her adult escort to help her find food. The relationship between pups and escorts varies enormously. Some forge lasting bonds, sticking together throughout the whole escorting period. Other pups may have a different escort each and day and others still grow up without any escorts at all, flitting from one adult to another, begging for food. But having some form of escort is a definite advantage for the pups. New mums do escort pups but they show no preference for their own offspring.
