Scottish swarms
The Highland midge is on the wing from April to September, but a rainy June has helped them reach their peak. The males gather in huge swarms, which the females then visit to find a mate.
It is only the females that bite, because they need blood to get into breeding condition. Many of the creatures in the local ecosystem rely on the midges and their larvae for food.
