Away We Go
The director Sam Mendes is famous for his study of American marital angst with films such as American Beauty and Revolutionary Road. His latest, Away We Go, about a young couple expecting their first child is more of a light-hearted comedy about pregnancy and starting a family. Can Mendes pull off this change of direction? Film critic Nigel Floyd reviews.
Africa's first foundry for casting bronze sculptures
We travel to the border town of Kasese in Uganda to find out more about a new architecturally designed foundry that hopes to produce world-class African sculptors. The site is still under construction but already the foundry has been busy producing works that include representational statues of the different Bugandan clans, as well as a crested crane for the British Royal Family.
Pauline Melville
In 1997 the Guyanese born writer Pauline Melville won the Whitbread First Novel Award for her book The Ventriloquist's Tale and received much critical acclaim. Salman Rushdie hailed her as one of the few genuinely original writers to have emerged in recent years.
Her latest book, Eating Air, gives her fans another opportunity to revel in the mixture of politics, satire and wit that characterises her first book. It's the 1970s in London - the beautiful Ella De Vries dances with the Royal Ballet. When she falls in love with the Dionysiac rebel and free spirit Donny, they move into a household of political radicals and get casually drawn into extremism. Pauline Melville talks about the themes and characters in the book.
