Before fresh dung has time to cool, the antenna of the dung beetle picks up its scent. Flying directly to the dung, the males quickly take their share and use the dung to attract a mate. The bigger the ball of dung the better the male's chances. A female will lay her eggs in the dung and bury the ball underground. The dung is then food for the grubs when they hatch.
