The Strand - Friday 3rd April 2009

Your daily journey into global arts, culture and entertainment, with Bidisha.

Your daily journey into global arts, culture and entertainment, with Bisha.

The Immigrant, a new novel by Delhi based writer Manju Kapur is set in the 1970s. It traces the physical and emotional journey of Nina - intelligent, well-educated, successful and stifled - who's reached what Delhi society considers to be a rather tricky age as she moves towards arranged marriage and emigration to Halifax in Canada.

The Baroque movement created some of the greatest artworks in the world from St Peter's in Rome to the paintings of Velasquez. Started by the Roman Catholic Church as an antidote to the Reformation, The Strand explores Baroque's global impact.

Everyone's had an adolescent moment dancing in their bedroom and wishing for pop star fame. Well, the dance venue Sadler's Wells in London could turn those dreams into reality. They've launched an online competition to find gifted dancers from all over the world.

The Strand will be talking to the Oscar winning Italian writer, director and actor Roberto Benigni about how he is using Dante as the inspiration for his political and satirical stand-up.
