Hollywood and Politics

With the US experiencing one of the most dramatic election seasons in recent history, Talking Movies examines the relationship between Hollywood and Washington.

In the final few days before the US presidential election Talking Movies will be looking at Hollywood's involvement with politics and Washington. The programme will be setting its critical eye on two very different biographical films unveiled this year on outgoing President Barack Obama, plus a portrait of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy will be revealed in the soon to be released film "Jackie", starring Natalie Portman in the title role. With Hollywood frequently castigated as a left-wing Democratic stronghold by its conservative foes the programme explores, with some surprising results, the extent to which Tinseltown is a liberal town. In a conversation with revered American documentary film maker D.A. Pennebaker, Talking Movies also looks back at the landmark 1960 political documentary "Primary". It was seen as the first film to truly use the techniques of "Direct Cinema" to show the day-to-day events in a US presidential race. Lastly, does Hillary Clinton like "The Wizard of Oz", or is that Donald Trump's favourite film? Find out as the programme looks at the movie preferences of the presidential candidates and seeing what it reveals.
