The Buried God

Bettany Hughes continues her exploration of the archaeological sites in Turkey, visiting the team at Aphrodisias, a Unesco World Heritage Site founded in the second century BCE.

Bettany Hughes continues her exploration of the archaeological sites in Turkey, this time visiting the team at Aphrodisias, a Unesco World Heritage Site founded in the second century BCE and named after the goddess Aphrodite. This sacred city, occupied by both the Greeks and Romans, was a renowned centre of learning and the arts, attracting scholars and artisans from across the empires. While Bettany and the team are filming, archaeologists make an amazing discovery: a 2,000-year-old colossal head of Zeus produced from a single block of marble. This is the most significant find in years, and it makes headlines across the world. The team carefully protect the sculpture and take it to the lab for analysis. As the statue is cleaned, Bettany reveals how the sophisticated carving on Zeus's beard and head was produced by an expensive technique called drilling, and the traces of pigment in his hair and beard suggest the intention to portray Zeus as a living god.
