Michael Portillo is transported 150 years back in time to the tiny Alpine village home of Switzerland鈥檚 most famous child, Heidi. In Davos, he follows in the footsteps of 19th-century convalescents at a former sanatorium, now the Hotel Schatzalp, and takes part in an icy cutting-edge experiment at the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research.
Michael finishes this leg of his railway journey in the Rhine Gorge, also known as the Swiss Grand Canyon, and learns how the incredible landscape was formed 9,500 years ago when a gigantic landslide dislodged ten billion cubic metres of rock.
