All or Nothing
Surgeons at NHS Lothian perform high-risk surgery to repair a failing heart and take extreme measures to prevent the return of breast cancer in a young patient.
At NHS Lothian's Royal Infirmary, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Renzo Pessotto takes on some of the most challenging cases in his field, and his next patient is no exception - a 78-year-old with a failing heart and a rare tissue disorder that affects just one per cent of the population.
At St John鈥檚 Hospital, to the west of Edinburgh, complex surgery is also on the agenda for consultant plastic surgeons Ewa Majdak-Paredes and Neil Cahoon. Their patient is 32-year-old Kat, who after undergoing treatment for breast cancer, recently discovered she has a rare genetic mutation that means the cancer is likely to return. Ewa and Neil perform a preventative double mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
