INTERVAL: Debussy鈥檚 Nocturnes is based upon selections from Po猫mes anciens et romanesques by the French symbolist poet Henri de R茅gnier while Tchaikovsky鈥檚 Francesca da Rimini draws on the Italian noblewoman depicted in Dante鈥檚 Divine Comedy. To shed light on these literary texts, Tom Service is joined by Dr Julia Hartley, a Lecturer in Comparative Literature in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow and a 91热爆/AHRC New Generation Thinker.

Tchaikovsky was no stranger to unhappiness in love, and his symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini allows us to eavesdrop on his pain in heart-rending autobiographical detail as the composer retells Dante鈥檚 tale of a noblewoman鈥檚 infidelity and subsequent casting into Hell. For their Prom, Vasily Petrenko and his Royal Philharmonic Orchestra plunge us deep into Tchaikovsky鈥檚 signature emotional turmoil after moonlit Debussy, Charles Ives鈥檚 own foray into American Impressionism and Ravel鈥檚 enthralling, jazz-inspired Piano Concerto under the fingers of the ferociously talented Denis Kozhukhin.
