Rachmaninov鈥檚 Symphony No. 2, a passionate, unashamedly emotional score, music of rolling storm-clouds, blissful romance and melodies that seem to stretch out to the horizon, is paired here with Elgar's Cockaigne Overture, a brilliant portrait of London life and all its vigour in the bustling streets of the English capital at the end of the Victorian era.
Before the interval, British soprano Louise Alder takes us into the intimate world of Strauss鈥檚 songs.
