Later in the programme, Deepa Shastri looks at South Asian history through an exciting new play at the National Theatre in London, The Father and the Assassin. The play tackles one of the formative moments in Indian history: the murder of Mahatma Gandhi. Told from the perspective of Godse, Gandhi’s assassin, it is a slice of history we do not often hear about. The play is widely thought to make a link between nationalism then and now. Finally, we go behind the scenes at the British Library to see how rare books are restored. Roger Cox, the ‘book doctor’ has been conserving books for over 25 years.
