Pocket Guides 2023 - Part 2: Jessie Ware, Jockstrap, Lankum, and Loyle Carner

Matt Everitt profiles this year's Mercury Prize nominees from Jessie Ware, Jockstrap, Lankum, and Loyle Carner.

In the second part of three pocket guides, Matt Everitt profiles four of this year鈥檚 Mercury Award nominated albums, with bespoke & archive interviews as well as deep cuts.

The next album he covers in this series is by Jessie Ware. That! Feels Good! is Jessie's fourth album and its a collection of proper dancefloor fillers that are never more than a few pounding beats away from a melodic hook with Jessie sounding like she's having the time of her life.

Jockstrap's debut I Love You Jennifer B is easily one of the most surprising, original and sometimes bewildering albums to make the Mercury list. NME described it as "deconstructed experimental folk-pop funnelled through a post-dubstep and warped electronic style of production.鈥� London-based duo of Taylor Skye and Georgia Ellery aren鈥檛 one thing stylistically; the only thing you can expect is that they鈥檒l surprise you.

Next it's Lankum with their fourth album, False Lankum. Lankum are a Dublin four-piece who's music blends traditional folk and traditional songs, framing them against deep gothic soundscapes, restless, often disconcerting instrumentation, but offset by beautiful melodic dreamlike vocals. They are rightly regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative folk bands around.

Finally in this episode, Matt profiles Loyle Carner's highly regarded & bookies favourite, hugo. This album is a journey into Loyle鈥檚 heart, and at it鈥檚 core it's about his own relationship with himself, what鈥檚 expected of him 鈥� his relationship with his estranged father, his own role as a father, how he and the world view his mixed-race heritage.
