Britpop Forever - Steve Lamacq celebrates 30 years of Britpop by chronicling the events and moments of the movement during 1995
The 30th anniversary of Britpop gives us the unique opportunity to tell some of the greatest stories in pop history during such a pivotal moment in British culture. Britpop was the last hurrah for the music industry before it was changed forever by the emergence of the internet. As co Host of Radio 1’s legendary Evening Session, Steve Lamacq was there, in the middle of all of it.
In this programme, we follow Pulp who released the era defining single Common People in May before going onto headline the Glastonbury Festival in June and release their ground-breaking album Different Class in October.
1995 also saw Blur playing a legendary gig at London’s Mile End Stadium before releasing the final album in their Britpop Trilogy – The Great Escape, we hear about The Charlatans and Elastica both get to number 1 in the album charts, and of course, the biggest chart battle in 30 years as Blur’s Country House takes on Oasis’ Roll With It.
Then, in the final 30 minutes, Steve repeats Pulp’s 1995 Glastonbury Festival performance, recorded on the 24th June on the Pyramid Stage
