Mairi Ross from Point on the Isle of Lewis has been passionate about horses since the age of three. Though her love of horses has been lifelong, she is eager to learn more about Scotland’s four native breeds: the Eriskay Pony, Shetland Pony, Highland Pony and Clydesdale horse.
With this in mind, Mairi embarks on a journey where she meets like-minded people who care deeply about the different breeds and finds out what they are doing to preserve their numbers going into the future.
Her first stop is the beautiful island of Eriskay where she meets DJ MacInnes, registrar of The Eriskay Pony Society, who highlights the very real plight of keeping the horses from going extinct. She visits Shetland to see the island’s well-known breed of ponies thriving in their natural environment, takes a trip to Rum where she discovers a unique version of the Highland Pony and journeys to Nairn to meet passionate Clydesdale breeders David and Beverly Walker. Mairi also attends one of the most famous agricultural events in Scotland, The Royal Highland Show, which showcases the best of the native breeds.
