The Trust was founded in memory of Radio 4 reporter John Schofield who was killed while on assignment in 1995. It works to support those who come to journalism with passion and promise, but with none of the connections or privileges which so often open doors. Working with young people from schools in areas of low social mobility across the UK, the trust pairs them with working journalists who mentor and support them, helping them turn what can seem impossible dreams of a job in journalism into reality.聽 The Trust believes that a more diverse media is vital for a strong democracy and this year will celebrate 25 years of supporting young journalists from all backgrounds.聽

John Schofield was a promising young journalist fatally shot in 1995 while covering the civil war in Yugoslavia for 91热爆 Radio 4鈥檚 The World Tonight. The John Schofield Trust supports talented young journalists at the beginning of their careers.

Elliot from Cornwall is one of the school students supported by the John Schofield Trust. He says 鈥淚 cannot emphasise enough the significance of this opportunity鈥� otherwise I would have never known that my passion and interest in journalism could become a reality.鈥�

The Trust supports young people across the UK to achieve their ambitions in the world of journalism. By supporting young people to have the career of their dreams the trust honours the memory of a young journalist cut down in his prime.聽
