Morden Hall Park: Postbag

Peter Gibbs and the panel are at Morden Hall Park, London.

Peter Gibbs and the panel are at Morden Hall Park, London. Christine Walkden, Matt Biggs and Juliet Sargeant answer the horticultural questions.

This week, the panellists suggest some cascading plant ideas for a flat roof, as well as offering up tips for starting an orchard and musing over the fascinating history of growing holly next to oak trees.

Horticulturalist at Morden Hall Park, Jade Wall, takes the team on a tour round the park's Edwardian rose garden, willow wood, and the wetland fed by the river Wandle.

(7 minutes 10 seconds)Ìý

Ìý

Climbing rose

Ìý

Q – We would like to do some planting on our flat roof. Whilst our neighbours have a great view of the roof, from above, we realised we had none. Can the panel suggest some plants to cascade over the side of the roof to give us some reward for our efforts?

(8 minutes 42 seconds)

Ìý

Juliet –

Cerastium tomentosum, Snow-in-summer

Ìý

Biggsy –

Thyme

Ìý

Christine –

Alpine phlox

Ìý

Q – I bought a Rosa ‘Margaret Merril’. I put it in the garden, in Essex clay, and it seemed to shrink. In desperation, I dug it up and put it in a planter and it’s growing well. Should I dare put it back into the garden?

(11 minutes 21 seconds)

Ìý

Feature – Peter and the panellists take a look at Morden Hall Park’s Willow Wood

(14 minutes 58 seconds)

Ìý

Crack willow

White poplar

Ash

Ìý

Q – We planted this sorry looking willow a couple of years ago. We live in a very exposed spot and storm got the better of it, earlier this year.

(16 minutes 24 seconds)

Ìý

Q – This year, I decided to grow potatoes in containers and decided to try the second early variety – charlotte. I understand potatoes are in the same group as tomatoes and therefore there are determinate and indeterminate varieties. I have read that one of the differences between these types is that they will crop at different levels in the soil. Could the panel advice, therefore, which type is best to grow in a container so that the container is filled with potatoes, rather than just a layer at the bottom of the container?

(19 minutes 25 seconds)

Ìý

Q – We want to plant apples! What full proof varieties do you recommend for inexpert gardeners such as we are? We’re interested primarily in eaters and cookers and ideally would like a complimentary mix in terms of pollinators, time of harvest, storability, and aesthetic appeal. We would prefer dwarf varieties so that we can avoid step ladders.

(22 minutes 31 seconds)

Ìý

Feature – Jade shows the team over to the park’s wetlands, fed by the river Wandle

(25 minutes 46 seconds)

Ìý

Q – We have a 3 foot, south facing wall in our garden. I’m looking to create a bed about 12 – 18 inches in width immediately behind the wall, along its full length, with the view to planting something heat-tolerant, plants or shrubs to cascade over the wall to soften its appearance. I’d like to find plants that are evergreen and won’t drop leaves to such an extent that a daily sweep of the path is needed to help keep things looking tidy.

(27 minutes 24 seconds)

Ìý

Christine –

Libertia peregrinans

Caylix

Ìý

Matt –

Lavender

Lavandula × intermedia 'Grosso'

Ìý

Juliet –

Osteospermum jucundum

Ìý

Q – I planted a clematis armandii, ‘snowdrift’ in 2021. It was in a medium sized pot, initially, but it has stopped blooming and has what look like scorch marks on the leaves. It is in a raised bed that gets plenty of sun, especially in the summer. It is in sandy topsoil that was added over quite heavy clay when it was built last year. I water it from time to time and apply a liquid feed from time to time. What is going on?

(32 minutes 33 seconds)

Ìý

Q – I am determined to grow sarcococca for the scent. I hear they like shade - I have a nice shady spot to grow them in pots, but my concern is that heard they like their soil damp. I live in Lincoln and it’s very often dry. Have you grown them, and do you have suggestions for success?

(34 minutes 30 seconds)

Ìý

Juliet –

Sarcococca, [Winter gem]

Ìý

Matt –

Lonicera × purpusii 'Winter Beauty'

Daphne 'Jacqueline Postill'

Ìý

Q – We’ve just spent a few days camping in the new forest. It seemed like every oak had a holly bush growing by it. Originally, we thought it might be a local tradition as other trees didn’t seem to be involved, but it was so widespread but now we wondered if it was squirrels storing them. It would be great to know what is causing this!
