IDLES’ Joe Talbot on dreams, long walks and processing your anger

Slip into Arlo’s world for an hour of music, thoughts and reflections. Also, IDLES’ Joe Talbot joins to swap songs and stories, from Kelsey Lu to Nick Drake.

Step into Arlo’s inner world for an hour of music and musings on creativity, comfort and inspiration. She’s called it Dream Fuel - a scrapbook in sound of her favourite tracks, poems, personal voice notes, field recordings and special guests.

In this episode, Arlo is joined by Joe Talbot, the frontman of Grammy-nominated rock band IDLES. Formed in Bristol in 2009, the five-piece’s sound has elements of hardcore, noise rock and post-punk, with Joe’s powerful, impassioned vocals reflecting on themes from grief and loss to politics, addiction and the class system. Their most recent album, Crawler, was nominated for two Grammys, and Joe as a soloist has collaborated with artists including Anna Calvi, Jehnny Beth and METZ.

Joe joins Arlo in the studio for a special exchange of music and stories, from the dreamy sounds of Kelsey Lu and Weyes Blood to the nostalgic inspirations of Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. They consider the importance of long walks in nature, discuss recurring dreams and the music that could soundtrack them, and reflect on anger and emotional maturity.

Also, Arlo selects some of her musical favourites, including My Bloody Valentine, Gil Scott-Heron and Alogte Oho, and reflects on how music provides her with a sense of escape as well as the importance of sitting in the moment.

Arlo Parks is a London born singer-songwriter and poet, who came onto the music scene back in 2019. Her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, won the 2021 Mercury Prize, and in the same year she won Best New Artist at the Brit Awards.
