James Patterson - the world's best-selling author, with more than 350 million books sold worldwide - chooses the Tracks of My Years all week with Ken.

The son of an insurance salesman and a schoolteacher, James grew up in Newburgh, New York, and began writing casually at 18. He was first paid to write as a junior copywriter in New York, but left the world of advertising behind to concentrate on his creative writing. James has gone on to create enduring fictional characters such as Alex Cross, as well as collaborating on famous fiction with President Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton.

James is also hugely passionate about encouraging children to read and has written a range of books for younger readers inspired by his own son. Now James has charted the story of his career for the first time in his memoir The Stories Of My Life, which has just been published.
