One Night at the Fish Market - Grimsby

A night shift at Grimsby Fish Market where the race is on to get the catch ready to sell. The team are part of the two-million-strong workforce in
England who regularly work nights.

12% of all workers now work nights and 62% of night workers are men. On this night shift at Grimsby Fish Market, it’s a race against the clock to get the freshly-caught stock ready for sale. The men work as a team to ensure the fish are weighed and graded in time for the daily auction.

It’s physically exhausting work, but necessary to ensure plentiful supply of fish for our chip shops and fish counters. They are among the workforce of two million people in England who regularly work night shifts but working in the wee small hours does come with a health warning and is thought to be linked to an increase risk of diabetes, heart disease, depression and insomnia.
