Music, chat and funk legend George Clinton

Mark and Stuart present a feast of great music and hear from funk music legend George Clinton who shares his ‘First, Last and Everything’.

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie present a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.

Today, Mark and Stuart hear from a bona fide funk legend. George Clinton, the head of influential funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic, shares his 'First, Last and Everything' - that’s the first record he enjoyed, the most recent one he’s been enjoying and the record that means ‘everything’ to him.

George’s early music career in the 1960’s saw him form his own band ‘The Parliaments’ and work as a staff writer and producer at Detroit’s Motown label. By the 1970’s he had formed the Parliament-Funkadelic collective and pioneered the infamous P-Funk sound which has influenced – and been sampled by – many artists since including Dr Dre and De La Soul. He’s collaborated with the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus, and his latest collaboration sees him featuring in the new music of the Smudge All Stars collective.

As part of his First, Last and Everything chat, George talks about his early love of doo-wop, his current music projects and his passion for painting, one of the things that has helped him through lockdown.

Also on the show... long-running feature ‘The Chain’, which gives listeners the chance to pick a track that links in some way to the last. The list now contains over 8000 songs.

With a selection of music old and new to get the weekend started.
