A call to help a patient threatening to jump off a bridge requires an urgent response during a busy day shift for the staff of North West Ambulance Service.
Cameras follow the staff of North West Ambulance Service as they care for the people of Lancashire as a deadly second wave of Covid-19 sweeps across the UK. Working alongside the ambulances across the region is a mental health triage car, which is staffed by paramedics, police and mental health services. This work in the community aims to reduce the number of mental health hospital admissions.
On Monday morning, a call is received from the police reporting a serious road traffic accident on the motorway. Crewmates Josh and Josh are immediately dispatched to the scene, where they will be joined by advanced paramedic Vinny. They arrive to find two patients who need urgent treatment.
Four hours into the shift, 156 patients are waiting for an ambulance. The mental health triage car is dispatched to assist an 18-year-old woman. On arrival, they find that she is a patient they have attended to before. They decide to take her to the nearest emergency department, but en route the patient鈥檚 condition suddenly deteriorates, leaving ambulance crewmates Nutan and Lisa to make some urgent clinical decisions.
At the beginning of another night shift the team clocking on are greeted with the news of the governments one per cent pay rise for some NHS staff. Josh and Josh are dispatched to a patient who has injured himself while doing the splits. It soon becomes clear that his unfortunate injury is one of a catalogue of accidents this injury prone patient has suffered. Later, a call reporting a stabbing turns out to be a hoax, leaving call handler Elly feeling frustrated and angry.
Nutan and Lisa are dispatched to a category-two call concerning an elderly patient who is at home with her husband. It becomes clear that although the patient needs an urgent medical review of her condition, she and her husband do not want to be separated. This leaves Nutan looking for other ways to get the couple the help they need.
