Matthew Sweet is joined by director Mike Leigh to talk about his ideas about music for films and to look back on some of the scores for films such as the historical dramas 'Mr Turner', 'Peterloo' and 鈥楾opsy-Turvy鈥�. He first came to prominence with the Play for Today TV drama 鈥楴uts in May鈥� in 1976, and for many years he was known for his improvised domestic dramas. He tells Matthew about his work with composers Andrew Dickson (鈥楴aked鈥�, Mean Time鈥� and 鈥楬igh Hopes鈥�) and Gary Yershon (鈥楶eterloo鈥�, 鈥楬appy-Go-Lucky鈥� and 鈥楢nother Year鈥�). There鈥檚 jazz from Marianne Jean-Baptiste (鈥楥areer Girls鈥�) and an excerpt from one of Rachel Portman鈥檚 earliest scores (鈥楩our Days in July鈥�). And we hear Carl Davis鈥檚 versions of Gilbert and Sullivan (鈥楾opsy-Turvy鈥�).

Mike Leigh鈥檚 work is celebrated by the BFI in October and November on the Southbank in London and at 91热爆 in Manchester, with the release of a new print of his 1993 classic 鈥楴aked鈥�, and with the appearance of a new, revised version of 鈥楳ike Leigh on Mike Leigh鈥�.
