with Cathy Macdonald

Susie Orbach on society attitudes to larger bodies; Stuart Cosgrove reflects on the gospel roots of Aretha Franklin; Lyndon Harris recalls witnessing the 9/11 attacks in New York.

With increasing awareness about how to talk about gender, race and disability, is sizeism the last taboo? And what impact does that have on those who are living in larger bodies? Cathy is joined by Dr Natasha Larmie, and psychoanalyst, Susie Orbach, author of Fat is a Feminist Issue.

Victim Support Scotland’s newly published report makes the case for a Victims’ Support Commissioner for Scotland. The organisation’s CEO Kate Wallace, and Lynn Burns who started campaigning for a better victim experience in the judicial system after her son Sam was killed, talk about the impact such a role would have.

US President Joe Biden encountered criticism recently when he met families who had lost servicemen in the Kabul airport bombing. In an attempt to show he understood their pain, he focussed on his own experiences of loss, which angered some families. Lynn Burns and Susie Orbach discuss how best to bear witness to someone else’s grief.

Lyndon Harris was the Episcopal priest of St Paul’s Chapel New York in 2001 on the morning of the 9/11 attacks. He recalls the immediate aftermath and the repercussions of the attacks both personally and for his interfaith community.

The events of 9/11 have left an indelible mark on history, but 20 years on, what have the longer-term effects been on wider interfaith relations? Cathy is joined by Yahya Barry, Director of the Olive Tree Madrasah, and Reverend Teri Peterson, originally from the USA and now the Church of Scotland minister of St John’s in Gourock.

This weekend sees a new film released about the life and music of Aretha Franklin. Broadcaster and author of ‘Detroit 67: The Year That Changed Soul’, Stuart Cosgrove, gives us his thoughts on one of the greatest singers of any generation.
