Devlin and Burns
Barristers Jeremy and Sasha look back at their investigation into the case of Edward Devlin and Alfred Burns and learn of mounting support for an official review of the case.
Top criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein look back at their examination of the troubling case of Edward Devlin and Alfred Burns, who were arrested and sentenced to death for the murder of Beatrice Rimmer, found dead in her home in Liverpool in 1951.
Devlin and Burns were petty criminals, known to the police for a series of robberies around their native Manchester. During the trial, the prosecution alleged that the motive for the murder was robbery, but nothing was taken from Beatrice鈥檚 home.
Sasha and Jeremy teamed up with Lindsay, a relative of Edward Devlin who had flown over 10,000 miles from Australia, to examine the case in more detail. Questions about the murder weapon and the evidence of key witnesses raised concerns for the barristers. When troubling evidence of corruption on the part of the lead investigating police officer came to light, they put it to Judge Radford that the conviction of Devin and Burns may have been unsafe.
It has been over two years since the barristers' original investigation, and Lindsay has returned to London to investigate new leads that could yet persuade the CCRC to review the case. As Jeremy and Sasha catch up with Lindsay to hear about her progress, they discover that it has not been all plain sailing.
