Episode 14
Jay Blades and the team take on a garden gate, a rocking chair, a First World War soldier鈥檚 watch and a vintage arcade game.
Jay Blades and the team bring four treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life.
First, metal maestro Dominic Chinea faces an epic challenge when Liz Draper from Dorset delivers a crumbling, cast-iron garden gate. The gate was designed and built by her brother as a gift for Liz and her late husband, Ken. Ken was an army man and proud member of the Royal Lancers, and the gate鈥檚 design incorporates his regiment's badge.
Horologist Steve Fletcher and leather expert Suzie Fletcher are brought a century-old watch with an extraordinary tale. It was awarded to Nancy Dyer鈥檚 father for bravery on his return from the Great War and was proudly worn by Nancy at special family occasions, until it was stolen during a burglary at her house. The family were distraught and gave up hope of ever seeing the watch again, but eight years later it was miraculously rediscovered in a field by a dog walker. The watch is in a terrible condition - rigid with rust, after years lurking under a bush - but if anyone can get it ticking again, it鈥檚 Steve. .
Upholsterer Sonnaz Nooranvary takes on a rocking chair that has been at the heart of a family home for decades. Anna Anobile from Manchester is very attached to this piece of furniture, which holds memories of her and her sister鈥檚 happy upbringing - of bedtime stories and loving parents. Sonnaz strips off the old fabric and varnish, and Jay鈥檚 expert eye comes in handy for selecting the perfect fabric to reupholster with.
Finally, arcade ace Geoff Harvey restores a vintage penny arcade game. Ruth Banks and her Auntie Roz from Sheffield deliver the 1920s machine. It belongs to Ruth鈥檚 father, Stephen, and they know how much he鈥檇 love to play with it again for old times sake. Geoff opens it up and gets to work on the mechanism, and wood restorer Will Kirk takes on the damaged wooden cabinet.
