with Tony Kearney
Find out what it takes to climb Mount Everest twice and walk to the South Pole solo before the age of 30, with President of Scouts Scotland Mollie Hughes.
Adventurer and first woman President of Scouts Scotland, Mollie Hughes, chats to Tony about building resilience and strength of character. She’s needed both traits for expeditions she undertook to reach the summit of Everest, and the South Pole solo.
At a time when travelling is not an option, will the pandemic make us fundamentally re-think our need to jump on a plane or drive long distances? Tony discusses what travel post-pandemic might look like with travel writer Simon Calder, and Irene Beautyman, who advises local councils on planning around wellbeing outcomes.
It’s Fairtrade Fortnight and 2021’s theme of Choose The World You Want will resonate after a year that saw many of us reprioritise our lives. Tim Aldred of Fairtrade Foundation talks about how climate change and the pandemic are challenges ahead, but also the adaptability he’s witnessed with farmers and co-operatives around the world.
Simon May joins Tony to talk about his new book ‘How To Be A Refugee’, documenting his family’s escape from the Nazis. One of the legacies of that experience was their renouncing of their Jewishness in order to find a new sense of belonging somewhere else, and how crucial it is to find and build a sense of identity.
Film director Ben Sharrock’s new comedy-drama ‘Limbo’ explores themes familiar to many new arrivals to unknown lands, that sense of confusion and displacement and cultural misunderstandings, all set on a fictional Scottish island as they await the results of their asylum cases.
Simon May and Ben Sharrock are joined by Sabir Zazai, chief executive of the Scottish Refugee Council and a former asylum seeker, to discuss with Tony what assimilation and integration means for him and other displaced people coming to Scotland today.
