Novelist Steven Hall, comedian Marjolein Robertson, and new music from Alex Amor

Writer Steven Hall tells Janice about Maxwell's Demon, his long-awaited second novel. Plus comedian Marjolein Robertson on turning to folktales for escapism during lockdown.

Fourteen years ago writer Steven Hall published a bestselling debut, The Raw Shark Texts – and then disappeared from public view. He’s now back with his second novel, Maxwell’s Demon, featuring a writer who penned a bestseller and then disappeared… . He talks to Janice about the new book, perfectionism, playing with text, and taking inspiration from the ideas of Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell.

Comedian Marjolein Robertson tells Janice about taking part in The Stand Comedy Club’s Monday Night Improv sessions online, and Storytime with Marjolein, sharing folk tales online to provide a bit of escapism through lockdown.

As the Granite Noir festival goes online this year, Aberdeen City Archivist Phil Astley explains how an exhibition last year of historical photographs from the Register of Returned Convicts sparked so much interest it’s turned into a much bigger research project for him.

Cameron Mackay goes on a walk with a difference, a Chalk Walk: an Edinburgh art project inspired by current restrictions and daily exercise routines.

This week’s Afternoon Show Single of the Week is Love Language, by Glaswegian songwriter Alex Amor.

Doctor-turned-novelist-and-screenwriter Simon Stephenson joins Janice from LA to talk about his book Set My Heart to Five, which has just been optioned for film, and is set to be directed by Edgar Wright.
