Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
A few weeks ago, my wife and I were blessed to become grandparents for the first time. Our new granddaughter – Shoshana – is, of course, the cutest baby in the world.
I’ve been reflecting on how exactly this happened. But before anyone clever sends me a diagram, let me explain. I still consider myself relatively young and newly-married, but this is clearly mistaken. It seems that I am neither, but I am willing to relinquish this outdated self-perception in favour of the joys of grandparenthood. Everyone I’ve spoken to has described it as the greatest club in the world.
I’ve also been thinking about generational dynamics. As I said from my pulpit the week Shoshana was born, my paternal grandfather died before my parents married. While he never even saw grandchildren, my parents are now blessed to be great-grandparents, as is my mother-in-law. And they are all enjoying it immensely. And as our daughter is the eldest of a large family, Shoshana has lots of admiring relatives, including an 11-year-old uncle, who has adapted to uncle-hood very well.
An ancient Jewish teaching describes grandchildren as being like ones’ own children. Another, less well-known teaching suggests that people like their grandchildren more than their children! A cynic would suggest that this is because I can play with Shoshana and then hand her back to her parents when she cries or poos, which I couldn’t do with my own children. But the real explanation is probably to do with eternity. I sense that all of us want to leave something behind, to have changed the world in some way that lasts beyond our lives once we are gone. The birth of grandchildren gives us a sense that something of us will live on, stretching into a distant future that we can scarcely imagine.
Not all of us are blessed with children, or choose to have them. Yet I believe that we all have an underlying desire to make a lasting impact. There are many ways to do this – it can be a through a programme that helps disadvantaged people to thrive, a meaningful engagement with climate change and sustainability, even a kind word that restores someone’s confidence and transforms their life. Each of us, in our own way, can leave a mark on the world, a trace on eternity.
