Pause For Thought
Stepping ashore the Island reminded me of the first time I visited, years ago. Back then, Peel island in the lake district had seemed huge to my tiny child legs. Like the 1930s book it inspired: 鈥淪wallows and Amazons鈥, this island seemed to me beautiful and full of worlds to be discovered. I remember playing hide and seek, and my parents taking so long to find me, that I got afraid I might get lost forever, and had to come out of hiding and shout for them. It seemed to take hours to drudge back to them, all the way across the island. But visiting this time, at the age of 31, it took me under 2 minutes to stumble across on my flip flops, wading through rubbish, mud and stinging nettles, whilst my sister had garnered the interest of the local leeches. As I get older, things seem to get smaller.听
Time seems to move faster. The world appears less exciting. I see more injustice and darkness. Disillusionment is something I think we all feel as we grow up. And disillusionment is said to define my 鈥渕illennial鈥 generation. In one sense it might be a good thing, disillusionment seems to me better than ignorance. But the question I鈥檓 asking as I get older is: what do I do with this disillusionment? How might I avoid despair, or Bitterness? One response is action: trying to change the problems that I see. But my experience is, if change is driven by disillusionment, I tend to be prone to burnout, because there is no guaranteeing the problem will ever go away. In the Bible, a prophet called Isaiah presents another option. Whenever we become disillusioned about something that we used to see as full of hope, maybe this is a chance to change what we hope in. Isaiah reminds us that "those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength鈥.听
Whilst everything in this life is going to let us down at some point or other, I believe God will not because he is good. What鈥檚 more I trust God will give me the strength to face a difficult world, and perhaps even the strength to change it. Maybe hope is not so much exclusive to childhood, but a matter of how we see the world. When we returned to Peel island this time, all those years later we played hide and seek again. We鈥檙e a lot bigger now so our old hiding spots left arms heads and bums sticking out, but it was good to see the world like a child again. Even if just for a moment.
