Episode 10
Dr Mike’s team faces a desperate struggle to save a foal with a deadly disease. Meanwhile, Dr Chris treats a possum that has been attacked by a dog and works to protect wildlife from feral cats.
In this episode, it is still early morning when the first patient turns up at the Bendigo Equine Hospital. Lloyd the horse has pierced his knee while leaning over a fence to reach some hay, and owner Donna is concerned about fluid that has been oozing from the wound overnight. The cut is small, but Dr Mike is worried the wire may have damaged the joint, which can be slow to heal.
Over at the animal hospital, wildlife carer Brenda has brought in an brushtail possum injured in a suspected dog attack for a follow-up consultation with Dr Chris. He is concerned one of the possum's wound is not healing as quickly as it should. All wounds have cleared up except for one, which appears to be resistant to the antibiotic treatment. Dr Chris hopes a different type of drug will have the possum ready for release in no time.
Back at the equine hospital, a newborn foal has been brought in with blood in its urine. The young horse is too weak to stand and needs urgent assistance. A blood test confirms Dr Sarah’s worst fears – the foal has an auto-immune disease which is causing its own blood cells to break down. The team needs to act urgently to save the foal’s life!
