VIOLENT CRIME
(PRES)Good Evening, In just seven days this month, Greater London saw seven violent deaths. An appalling snapshot of what is now happening to the crime rate, post lockdown. Homicide in the capital is up 23 percent in the year to April - or to put it in a wider context - knife crime is now fifty one percent higher than when records began just under a decade ago. Stop and search has doubled in the last year too. It's without doubt one of the most controverisal responses to rising crime. You can argue it deploys specific intelligence - but it often disproportionately targets young black men. All of this against a backdrop of renewed questions over racial justice and policing sparked by the death of George Floyd. In an extended - exclusive film, Newsnight went on patrol with one of the Metropolitan Police's newly formed violence supression units. Richard Watson has our report (pkg).

(PRES)Joining me now.. Janet Hills, Chair of the Metropolitan Black Police Association and Norman Brennan, retired London police officer of 31 years and founder of campaign group, Protect the Protectors. <1. Norman Brennan: Young black men were stop and searched 20 thosuand times in london during lockdown. Equivalent of A QUARTER of all young black men . Is that justifiable? 2. London black person is four times more likely to be stopped and searched than white person. Can you see how this contributes to a sense of disenfranchisement and anger? you heard the man in the film talking about his own son - it destroys them... 3. Leroy Logan - you cant arrest your way out of the problem. 4. Violent surpression unit - is not tackling root problems. systemic inequalities. 5. Youre talking from the outside - isnt that part of the porblem. Janet is talking from the inside and her nephew was stopped under section 60 - which needs no grounds for suspicion. Janet Hills: 1. The police there told us they were following intelligence led information. COunter police unit given information that a known gang of black teenagers would be out robbing possibly with knives. 2. At that point isnt it a dereliction of duty to think about anything else than stopping that crime youve been warned about. 3. stop and search led this unit to a drug dealers house - ?60,000 in cash and a Rambo? knife.4. If this works - you cant ignore its effectiveness. 5. how do you do it?

(PRES)The budget airline Jet2 has now cancelled all flights to the Ibearian peninsular as it became clear the government was prepared to double down on its quarantine regulations for Spain. This evening the foreign office extended its demands to the Balearic Islands and even the Canaries, some eleven hundred miles further south. The move is nothing if not decisive. The government is unapologetic. So what's behind it? And where does it lead? Our diplomatic editor Mark Urban is here. (1 plus1). WHY? < (disfunction between foreign office /home office - COVID 0) 2. What about the other countries? (14.1)

(PRES)One of the hardest things of this pandemic has been filtering what we DO know about the disease from what we DONT know. Remember those early days when voice notes were shared - telling you to drink hot water, stay away from metal - and keep your throat hydrated. Remember those middle days when the benefits of hydroxychlorochine were invoked - and even, briefly, bleach -by the US President. Two scientists have taken it upon themselves to call out -their words - Bullshit.to show the susceptibility even of science, and to make us question how we are using the information that bombards us. Carl Bergstrom is an evolutionary biologist, Jevin West is a data scientist. Calling BUllshit is the name of their new book. They join us now. Jevin West: <1.Everyone thinks they know what bullshit is - but each of ours will be different. Whats yours? 2. What do you think the biggest - most dangerous - bullshit moment of this pandemic has been?3. Today we saw Lewis Hamilton - formula one racer - issue a retraction for suggesting that Bill Gates was part of a vaccination conspiracy. Carl Bergstrom1. dont you have to be sympathetic to people, governments tryning to find their way through this forest of information.2. Government has told is consistently its following the science -but what your book is show us how many ways there are to interpret that same science. you can read a chart six different ways? - there is NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH. 3. Trump laughed out of town for saying America has higher numbers because they test more. BUt truly if you dont test no one knows your numbers so that's not incorrect? 4. Where do you draw the line between truth seeking and cancellation culture. Isnt it better to have the debate - hydroxy chloroquine.
