After an underwhelming draw with Switzerland in their opening match, the Three Lions came into this game under pressure. Midfielder Paul Gascoigne had been substituted as England struggled in the second half against the Swiss, and was fearful of losing his place for this match. The Scots, meanwhile, had been buoyed by their draw against the Netherlands. Though underdogs, they were dreaming of a first Wembley win since 1981.
