Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:Ìý
Recently I had an experience that I know I am not alone in, an experience that I'm sure hasÌý Ìýbeen experienced by other people across the globe. My family received a phone call from a doctor saying my grandmother who is in a care home with dementia, is showing symptoms of covid19 and as a result, they are putting her into isolation, they don’t know what will happen,Ìý but we should prepare for the worst.Ìý
My grandmother, the once matriarch of the family, doesn't know where she is and what is happening, and this leaves my family, her loved ones to be worried. It is at this time I wish I could be by her side, and tell her the great stories of our family that she once told me, remind her of her grandmother, Darkus, who was renowned for hosting village-wide gatherings and cooking roast breadfruit and saltfish under the naseberry tree. I wish I could oil her silvery hair whilst reminding her of the fact that there is no ginger beer quite like herÌý ginger beer.Ìý
I wish I couldÌý hold her hand and show her love, but the only way to show love in this current situation is by staying away and trusting that the care professionals with whom she now solely rely on, will do their best I trust the carers, like I trust nurses and nursing assistants, because I was raised by women pretty much like them. Many of the women of my family, including my grandmother, took on such occupations and made caregiving more than just a vocational skill, theseÌý modern-day Mary SeacolesÌý understood the inseparable relationship between compassion and care, they knew in vulnerable times empathy becomes a form of mercy.Ìý
In Islam two of the divine attributes of God are Ar Rahman and Ar Raheem which loosely translate to mean the merciful and the compassionate Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse is one of the most praised scholars of the 20th century, and was born in SenegalÌý west Africa, he establish a community of Muslims, and his legacy lives on, he stated “The elite are those for who the divine attributes have been uncovered from behind the glorious divine majesty… They are the elite of God May our carers, our nurses and nursing assistants all be seen as elite in God's eyes because of the mercy and compassion that they show in their work.
