Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:
On one of our walks last week, I noticed a single red tulip in the midst of a swathe of bluebells. Frankly, it looked past its best. The petals weren’t dropping yet but the flower was somewhat floppy-looking. Yet in the sunlight, its rich red glow against the bluebells looked spectacular. So, I took a picture and posted it on social media with the line: ‘Just because you’re falling apart a bit doesn’t mean you’re not beautiful!’ Which brought a flood of ‘likes’ ‘loves’ and comments. It seems an image can touch the nerve in a way that mere words cannot..
I guess it’s how most of us feel from time to time: a bit bedraggled and coming apart – on the inside even if not the outside. Yet surely, we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t experience some of that, right now. I remember in the months following my enforced retirement due to Church rules, I would be driving along the road and suddenly blurt out angrily to my wife: ‘Who took my life from me?’
I felt hurt, bereaved and…frankly… ready to lash out at any bishop I came across! But then there were other times when I could see the benefits in so-called ‘retirement’, when I realised that, actually, I was liberated – to write more, travel more, be a priest in a much less restricted fashion. It wasn’t an end; it was a new beginning. I reckon there are lots of situations in life when we can’t do what we want to do, when our plans are blocked, our freedom is restricted – when jobs, relationships, possessions, loved ones are taken from us. And I think it would be weird not to feel angry and bereft…not to want to lash out in some way.
So, yes, I for one have moments (or days) of feeling like I’m falling apart a bit, when I blurt out that someone has taken my life away. But then I remind myself that, actually, my life is still here – whether in retirement, lockdown or whatever – and that instead of pining for the past or longing for the future I need to embrace now. Because this is my life. And it is beautiful, even when falling apart a bit.
