PRAYER FOR THE DAY Thursday 29 April 2020
Good morning
听
I have a good friend who works as an intensive care consultant. She has always struck me as a highly committed, competent and confident practitioner, thriving on the challenges of her work.
听
But the pandemic has changed her. She still comes across as competent and committed 鈥 but her confidence is noticeably shaken.
听
She鈥檚 fearful for her own family. She鈥檚 candid about the personal risks she faces. More concerned that her friends behave wisely 鈥 especially those with underlying conditions. And she is deeply troubled by the difficult ethical choices that must be made as limited resources are allocated.
听
As I listen to her, it鈥檚 natural to be in awe of everybody who works in the NHS. To clap and cheer on Thursdays at 8pm, secretly feeling a little bit useless.听
听
But I have my friend鈥檚 permission to reassure you - she doesn鈥檛 want us to feel like that.听 She says her role in the crisis is obvious 鈥 but adds that many of us with no medical expertise can still make things better if we are in good health right now. In a group chat a few days ago she said:
听
鈥淭he NHS workers are having their encouragement. Please seek your own role in all this craziness. If you bless or encourage one person it is not a waste. Some of you need to hear how important you are鈥.
听
You may be feeling powerless or useless today 鈥 but if you鈥檙e caring for others, looking after children, emptying bins, delivering food, calling lonely friends, sharing creative arts 鈥 or simply keeping the law by staying at home, you are playing a part that counts.
听
We thank you Lord for the dedicated and selfless work done by those in the NHS. In the pressure of lockdown, help us to be intentional in our service to others, and in so doing to mirror the compassion of Christ. Amen.听
