Episode 1

Episode 1 of 16

Yvonne and Julian look into designs and technology for deaf people and hear from Dr Justine Durno about the lack of deaf people in medicine and science.

Yvonne and Julian are in the studio, where they learn about the new building for the Exeter Deaf Academy that will open in four weeks and how the features that have been included in the design make it a deaf space.

Continuing with the theme of design, Vilma Jackson is in London to try on Cute Circuit’s sound shirt, which promises to change deaf people’s access to music. Vilma meets her friend Chris Fonseca, a professional dancer, to drop some moves and see if the sound shirt really does live up to the hype.

Yvonne and Julian invite Abigail Gorman, an activist and a member of the Deaf LBGTIQA+ Consultation group, to discuss the findings of a recent report about the needs and wants of the deaf LGBTIQA+ community.

Another activist, Dr Justine Durno, talks at the UN about the lack of deaf people in medicine and science. The team visit her at work at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital to find out more about what can be done to open up doors for deaf people who would like to go into medicine and science.

Last but not least, Yvonne and Julian say goodbye to interpreter Jean Breeze, who has been part of the See Hear team for over 30 years and has now decided to retire. They take a trip down the memory lane with Jean and discover how See Hear has changed over the years. They watch tributes from various deaf media professionals over a cake that Yvonne has made for Jean.
