The Police

Chris Daw QC and Ayesha Nayyar spend time with different police forces, looking at how they are dealing with crime. Ayesha thinks that the police need to 'get back to basics' - tough front-line policing that takes the fight to the bad guys. And they need to be given whatever tools they need to get the job done. Chris thinks that policing needs to adapt to modern society and the communities they serve. We can't just give Dixon of Dock Green a taser and expect it to turn out well.
Ayesha spends the day with the Greater Manchester Police, in particular with two bobbies on the beat. They tell her the truth about what's going on and how they do their job. Both are strong supporters of Stop and Search, as well as tasers. Meanwhile, Chris travels to Scotland, where he sees how a completely different policing model is being enacted. The Violence Reduction Unit was set up because 'you can't arrest your way out of a violence problem'. Instead, Police Scotland focus on intervention with criminals, getting them treatment and jobs.
Chris sends Ayesha to visit a community that has found itself on the wrong end of excessive Stop and Search. In Tottenham, she meets Ken Hinds, a community worker, who is working in the community to lessen tensions and stop accidents happening. Ayesha gets to witness a real time Stop and Search, and she is left feeling considerable admiration for Ken's skills. Ayesha sends Chris to visit a hi-tech security exhibition, where the latest in technology-assisted policing solutions are on display. He gets to see drones, body cams and facial recognition technology in action, but remains unimpressed.
