Script

Good morning.

While I was driving some time ago I heard an American astronaut talking on the radio.听 He reflected generally on how the space mission he had taken part in had changed his life. A sense of wonder was one of the themes he described. Looking down from space onto the earth below is one of the life-changing moments many such astronauts share. But when asked about how he felt about the dangers of such expeditions and the potential effects on family and friends he was more reflective; 鈥淪ure these things are big issues to be considered. The idea you might not come back is something you have to try to come to terms with. But you have to live your dreams鈥

It made me realise again the various ways in which pioneers of every kind live their dreams and have had to push out into the unknown in order to achieve new and important things. Whether that is in the field of endeavour, like climbing or sailing, or indeed in medical and scientific research, such work often demands total commitment and a single mindedness that many find difficult to even imagine.

Asked about the human cost of such commitment my astronaut recognised the shared burden so often carried by loved ones and colleagues. But his final comment has stayed with me when he simply said

鈥淕iving up on your dreams doesn鈥檛 come free either.鈥

Lord, In a world of never-ending possibilities it is easy to fear reaching out to new things. Help us never to lose sight of you, and the invitation to dream of a world where all can fulfill their full potential.听 Amen.
