The Japan Story
The boys' team and presenter Karim Zeroual are in Japan, being introduced to the national sport of sumo wrestling and experiencing a taste of local life.
The boys’ team of rugby player Franc, American footballer Reef and gymnast Sol are in Japan to learn the national sport of sumo wrestling. Watched over and cheered on by presenter Karim Zeroual, they are going to compete in a sumo wrestling tournament against top young locals at the end of the week.
Led by presenter Karim, they watch a terrifying demonstration of sumo by some impressive local competitors. They then go straight into their first training session – learning how to stomp and stretch like a pro.
Meanwhile, Karim tries to get into the sumo vibe by eating their favourite food – the calorific chanko nabe soup.
Head coach Sensai Inahara wants to test the boys’ leg strength, which is essential if they are going to have a chance of winning a wrestling match. To do so, he takes the boys to the mountains to scramble up rivers and squat under freezing cold waterfalls.
The training week culminates in the boys having to put everything they have learned into practice as they are taking part in a sumo tournament against some top youth players.
Looking the part in the traditional outfits of sumo wrestlers, in front of a local crowd and cheered on by Karim, can they pull off a miracle, avoid injury and beat the locals at their own game?
