Balcaskie

The team are on the Balcaskie Estate in the East Neuk of Fife, where Charlotte Smith tries her hand at the fast-growing rural sport of competitive ploughing.

Charlotte Smith, Ellie Harrison and Steve Brown are on the Balcaskie Estate in the East Neuk of Fife. It has a stunning coastline, top farmland and is the source of some of the best produce in Scotland. We’ll hear how it farms, feeds and supports the local community.

Charlotte hears from the estate manager how they are overhauling the way they farm, introducing new techniques such as mob grazing. She also tries her hand at what’s being dubbed 'the fastest growing rural sport in Scotland’ - competitive ploughing! Charlotte also asks whether farmers are being stopped from cashing in on one of the high street’s fastest growing health trends?

Steve is at Pittenweem harbour as the local fishing boats bring in their catch of the day, Ellie meets some local food producers and hears how the facilities on the estate offer a vital link in the chain from food to fork, and it’s a tense time for Adam Henson down on the farm as his cattle are tested for TB.

Bread and Brewing

Bread and Brewing

Farming and food at Balcaskie go hand in hand - the area produces some of the finest raw ingredients from both land and sea.

But most of it leaves the area for processing, including the grain.

However, one man is trying to change that as Ellie hears more from the ‘King of Sourdough’ Andrew Whitley and his miller, Connie Hunter.

The grain isn’t just milled for flour - it forms the main ingredient for the beer brewed on the estate.

Around the corner is the brewery run by Lucy Hine and her partner, Stephen Marshall, who reveal to Ellie the rather unexpected seaside source of their beers.

Ploughing the Land

Fife’s rich, loamy, stone-free soil is so wonderful to plough, it’s known as ‘God’s Land’ by local farmers.

And it’s the spiritual home of the European Ploughing Championships, organised by Willie Grieve.

Charlotte meets up with Willie to find out more and slides behind the wheel to see if she can plough like the very best in the field...

CBD or Bust?

CBD or Bust?
Charlotte investigates whether UK farmers are being prevented from cashing in on the high street's latest health craze: CBD oil. It's on the shelves in hundreds of well-being products now but CBD - or cannabidiol - is imported from abroad. It's comes from the cannabis plant and, while there is a regulatory system in place to allow farmers to grow the crop for industrial hemp or for licensed medicinal purposes, it seems no-one has yet been given permission to produce CBD.Charlotte finds out why...

Fishing Fleet

Fishing Fleet
The Balcaskie estate is clearly a land of farming riches but its waters also produce some amazing seafood.Steve discovers how the coast here has been a fishing mecca for centuries and finds out how things have changed today.Pittenweem is one of the busiest harbours on the Fife coastline and its fishing industry was built upon the fresh cod, haddock and herring that used to be landed here. But these days ³Ù³ó±ð²â’v±ð all gone and that means, with no fish to prey upon them, the shellfish are thriving instead. And, as Steve finds out, that's good news for local seafood-buyer Lewis Lowrie.

A Taste of Balcaskie

A Taste of Balcaskie

Ellie meets up again with Connie, who swaps her miller’s apron, for her gardening gloves, as she also runs the local vegetable plot.

She tells us how, as part of the Royal Highland Education Trust, children visit local community food producers, to learn more about where their food comes from.

Then, what better than some grub at the local after a long day in the fields?

Ellie becomes assistant chef to James Ferguson in the kitchen of Kinneuchar Inn, managed by Alethea Palmer.

She discovers how James strives to use local produce, including meat from his neighbour, Sophie Cumber the butcher!

After helping out in the kitchen, Ellie sees how all the local produce of Balcaskie comes together when it’s plated up – that includes tasting, with some assistance from Charlotte, of course!
