Only half of babies are now delivered by natural labour – with a sharp decline in numbers in recent years. Statistics published by the NHS in England show a drop from 69% in 2008 to only 50% last year – with the numbers in Scotland showing a similar decline. Experts put the decrease down in part to older mothers and a rise in obesity – but campaign groups say there’s too much pressure on expectant mothers to go for induced or caesarean births.
