Episode 7
Justus is delighted to become a 'soldier' defending Germany. He and a handful of other young boys are to hold a village street against the Americans.
Tha Justus (15) air a dh貌igh. Mu dheireadh thall tha e na 鈥渟haighdear鈥 agus comasach air a鈥 Ghearmailt a dh矛on. C貌mhla ri grunnan de bhalaich 貌ga eile, tha e an urra ris-san sr脿id baile a ghl猫idheadh bho na h-Ameireaganaich. A-r猫ir an 貌rdain feumaidh iad a 鈥済hl猫idheadh gus am bheil am fear mu dheireadh aca air fh脿gail鈥.
Tha Justus a鈥 gabhail smachd air na feachdan aca ach chan fhada gus a bheil 鈥渁n cogadh f矛or鈥 a鈥 cur 脿s dha na beachdan aige mu ghaisgeachd. Le na tancaichean Ameireaganach deiseal airson ionnsaigh a thoirt orra, tha co-dh霉nadh aig Justus ri dh猫anamh: an iarr e air na saighdearan 貌g a dhol a shabaid a dh鈥檃indheoin 鈥檚 cho follaiseach 鈥檚 a tha e gu bheil an n脿mhaid t貌rr nas cumhachdaiche.
Mar a b鈥 fhaide a mhair an cogadh, 鈥檚 ann a bu mhotha a chaidh clann a chur an s脿s anns an t-sabaid. Aig an 脿m sin, bha a鈥 mh貌r chuid de bhalaich 貌ga fhathast a鈥 creidsinn anns a鈥 鈥渂huaidh dheireannach鈥 ann an 鈥渁rm sh貌nraichte鈥 agus ann an geallaidhean a F眉hrer. Bha buaidh fhollaiseach aig dusan bliadhna de dheachdaireachd Nadsaidh. Tro 脪igridh Hitler bha na balaich 貌ga e貌lach air beatha campa, tr猫anadh arm, losgadh ghunnaichean agus spaidsearachd.
Dhaibhsan 鈥檚 e gaisgich a bha ann an saighdearan agus bha iad an d霉il gur e sgiorradh a bha c貌ir a bhith ann an cogadh. Bhiodh iad a鈥 seinn 貌rain mu bh脿s gaisgeach, ach bha am b脿s fh猫in fad 脿s. An uair sin chaidh an cur gu beul a鈥 bhl脿ir gun aon bheachd aca c貌 ris a bhiodh e coltach a bhith ga-r矛ribh a鈥 sabaid ann an cogadh. Bha iad fada ro 貌g airson na rinn iad agus na chunnaic iad. 鈥橲 iomadh d霉thaich a chur saighdearan chloinne an s脿s anns an D脿rna Cogadh. Tha an t-seachdamh earrann a鈥 d猫iligeadh le cuspairean saighdearan chloinne agus ag amas air taisbeanadh l脿idir a dh猫anamh an aghaidh f貌irneart agus gl貌rachadh cogaidh.
Fifteen-year-old Justus is delighted - finally, as a 'soldier' he can contribute to defending Germany. He and a handful of other young boys are given the task of holding a village street against the Americans. The order is to 'hold until the last man'. Justus leads his troops to the designated deployment area. But the 'real war' destroys all their hero fantasies. When the American tanks move into attack positions, Justus must decide: does he order the others to fight, despite their enemy's obvious superior strength?
The longer the war went on, the more children were forced to fight. At that time, most of the young boys still believed in the 'final victory', in 'super weapons' and the promises of the F眉hrer. Twelve years of Nazi dictatorship had left their mark. Camp life, military training, shooting, marching, drills - all these were things that the young boys already knew from being in Hitler Youth. For them, soldiers were brave heroes, war was supposed to be an adventure. They sang songs about dying a hero's death, but their own deaths were a long way off. And now they were to be sent to the front. But they had no idea what it really meant to fight in a war - not yet.
They were much too young for what they saw and for what they did. This episode deals with the topic of child soldiers and aims to make a strong statement against violence and the glorification of war.
