From the calm and collected Maria, from Glasgow, to Emma, from the Isle of Harris, whose nerves sometimes get the better of her, to Skye-based mother and daughter team Karen and Beth - we ask, what does it take to become a Highland dance champion?

We meet former champions, and also see the rigorous practice routines that the girls are involved in. It's not just about the dances though. Fitness and strength and conditioning classes are also a vital part of their week.

As Cowal comes ever near the practice intensifies, and there is even a dance boot camp! But it's not all hard work - lifelong friendships are also a big part of the world of the dance families.

Highland Dancing - The Road to Cowal flips the 'tartan stereotype' on its head, revealing modern Highland dance as more than just an art form - it's a place of true athletes, in training round the clock to reach the top.
