Ric Ocasek tribute

Huey pays tribute to Ric Ocasek of The Cars, an artist who was a key influence on him. Huey also marks what would have been Leonard Cohen's 85th birthday.

Earlier this week, Ric Ocasek - frontman of The Cars and producer of bands including Weezer, Bad Brains, The Cribs, and Guided By Voices - passed away aged 75. He and The Cars were a key influence on Huey when he was just starting out as a guitar player in New York. In this show, Huey pays his respects...

"When I first got into music The Cars鈥� first album was on the Colombia House album giveaway and I listened to it everyday and every night.
I was just getting into my first band, 鈥楽udden Death鈥� and we were gonna play a talent show at our lead singer鈥檚 school In NYC.
We learned 3 tunes.
Rock and Roll by Zep, Jumpin鈥� Jack Flash by the Stones and My Best Friends Girl by The Cars.
I was one of 2 guitar players in the band and I chose to learn and play the guitar solo from My Best Friends Girl.
It was an epic endeavour as Elliot Easton, the guitarist in the Cars is a Berkeley grad and an amazing guitar player.
The aesthetic The Cars created was so singular and the muted guitar strumming they started was so new, most cats slept on it.
Now here we are looking back on a guy who literally laid the groundwork for indie music, a guy who鈥檚 often overlooked by those who favor style over substance.
Ric Ocasek and The Cars will always remind us that you can have both, if you鈥檙e talented enough.鈥�
