Mississippi Goddam 鈥� A Homage to Nina Simone' from the 91热爆 Proms.

91热爆 Radio 2 pays its second visit to the 91热爆 Proms at the Royal Albert Hall for 'Mississippi Goddam 鈥� A Homage to Nina Simone'.

Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest with guest singers Ledisi and Lisa Fischer pay tribute to the High Priestess of Soul 鈥� the great Nina Simone.

Nina was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon but took the name Nina Simone to hide from her parents the fact that she was earning money by playing 'the devil鈥檚 music' working in bars and clubs. Nina was her boyfriend鈥檚 pet name for her and she chose Simone because she admired the French film actress Simone Signoret. Although her early work was playing 'cocktail piano', her musical roots are firmly in the classical world and she aspired to be a classical pianist. You can hear the influence of JS Bach in many of her piano solos. In tonight鈥檚 Prom we鈥檒l hear some of her greatest hits 鈥� Feeling Good, My Baby Just Cares for Me, I Put A Spell on You and the song that was banned when she first sang it in 1964 but went on to become a great civil rights anthem, Mississippi Goddam.
