Following the Scharer family, the new wardens of Bardsey, a remote island off north west Wales. Arriving alone and totally isolated, they immediately face many challenges.
Our Island 91Èȱ¬ is part of the Our Lives series of films from across the United Kingdom. It follows the Scharer family - Ned, Sophie, Rowan and Sam from Betws-y-Coed in the Snowdonia national park - who have beaten off competition from around the world to secure the job as the wardens of Bardsey Island. Bardsey is a remote yet idyllic island almost two miles from the coast of the Llyn peninsula in north west Wales. It’s the Scharers’ chance to escape the busy, tech-filled existence that so many of us lead and embrace the 'simple life' as the new custodians - managing, renovating, and caring for the island whilst hoping to become a closer family unit in the process.
They arrive on Bardsey in the brutal heart of winter, where they will have no neighbours, no shops, no school, and only limited solar-powered electricity and heating. For six months of the year, they will have only the wildlife and the wild sea as their constant companions. When they arrive they have to set up home schooling for the children, settle in their new chickens and try and make a home of the tiny, damp and freezing cold house they have been assigned. From here on it's back to basics with all the determination and passion they can muster. However, very soon after their arrival the Scharers face challenges that test the whole family .
