Vietnam: Hatred in the Name of Liberty
Allan Little examines how military training led many American troops to hate not just the Communist army they were fighting, but the entire Vietnamese population.
In the fourth part of his series on the mechanics of hatred, Allan Little examines how military training led many American soldiers to hate not just the Communist army they were fighting, but the entire Vietnamese population. This hatred would spur many to commit atrocities against civilians. We learn how a country founded on the ideals of the Enlightenment drew on misogyny and racism to drill conscripted soldiers in violent hatred – both in training and as they pushed through the jungles and villages of Vietnam.
