A' beartachadh an Lain/Harnessing the Tide
Tidal power testing in Orkney, and the Arctic tide reveals a story with global reverberations.
Anns a’ phrògram mu dheireadh san t-sreath de 3, meòraichidh sinn air mar a tha mac an duine a’ beartachadh an là in son diofar adhbharan Coinnichidh sinn ri cuid a tha ri dùbhlan snà imh agus an là n air a chleachdadh na chlach-bhogha, agus seallaidh sinn air teicneòlas cumhachd là in ann an Arcaibh.
‘S e an airbus A380 am plèana luchd-siubhail as motha san t-saoghal an-drà sta. Ach dè an ceangal a th’ aig an là n leis an leithid? Gheibh sinn a-mach mun phà irt riatanach a th’aige ann an sgeulachd a’ phlèana seo.
A bharrachd air sgeulachdan an là an-diugh, beachdaichidh sinn cuideachd air comasan an là in ann a bhith a’ beartachadh a chuid chumhachd san à m ri teachd son buannachd nan ginealaichean ri thighinn.
We explore how people harness the tide for different purposes, joining a swimming challenge that uses the tide as a catapult, and explore tidal power technology on Orkney.
The Airbus A380 is currently the largest passenger aircraft in the world - but what link can it possibly have with the tide? We discover that it in fact plays a central role in this plane’s story.
On the beautiful island of Bernera, in the Outer Hebrides, an art installation bell harnesses the tide’s power. Maritime lecturer and former fisherman Iain Macaulay is tasked with performing a vital repair to the bell - work which can only be done on a low spring tide.
In the Arctic a new tide is rising - a plastic tide, and with it a global threat. A team of young researchers find evidence of micro plastics, washed up and broken down by the tide.
As well as the stories of today, we also explore the tide’s potential in harnessing its power for the benefit of future generations.
