In the last adventure of the series, Marigold On Tour favourites Paul Nicolas and Rosemary Shrager are joined by comedy duo Ian and Janette Tough, better known as The Krankies. Together they are travelling over 5,000 miles to experience the secrets of a happy retirement in Mexico.
Beginning in the colourful city of Guadalajara, the group are keen to get to know their local surroundings with a meal out. While Rosemary takes the hot and spicy cuisine head on, the lively restaurant is also an opportunity for the group experience one of the city’s most famous exports, mariachi music. The next day begins with a visit to a government funded institute for the elderly, where the group take part in an energetic game of ‘catchiball’. Despite a sub-tropical storm flooding the local streets, Rosemary and Paul decide to brave the elements for front row seats at one of Mexico’s most popular spectator sports, wrestling. While they soak up the atmosphere, Ian and Jeanette decided to spend a romantic evening exploring the historic centre of the city.
For the second half of their stay the group swap the streets of Guadalajara for the lakeside retirement mecca of Ajijic. Mexico’s number one destination for American and Canadian retirees, the group waste no time in throwing themselves into the local way of life. A visit to the local English-speaking theatre results in Paul and Ian being invited to take part in the annual gala performance, while Ian and Jeanette get their glad rags on for a cocktail party with a difference. Thrown in the penthouse apartment of their hosts’ accommodation, Janette has her tarot cards read while Rosemary is surprised to learn that the party has the unusual addition of a doctor providing cosmetic procedures. Despite some initial reservations, Rosemary elects for a procedure commonly known as the Vampire Facelift!
As their time in Ajijic draws to a close, Ian and Rosemary go for an open paddle session on the lake, while Ian and Janette take part in an aqua aerobics session in one the area’s exclusive gated communities. With Ian having written a sketch for himself and Paul to perform, the group say goodbye to Mexico at the local theatre’s gala performance. With a new headline act on the billing, the night provides the group an
opportunity to reflect on the two contrasting sides of Mexican retirement.
